UN Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor Launches Final Report and Recommendations
On June 3, 2008, the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation attended the official launch of the final report and recommendations of the UN Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor at the UN headquarters in New York City. Several Lex Mundi member firms had provided country-specific research that was utilized in the preparation of the final report and recommendations. The work of Lex Mundi was expressly acknowledged in the final report. According to Commission Chairs Madeleine Albright and Hernando de Soto, the Commission's recommendations will help initiate a global movement for legal empowerment of the poor.
Subsequent to the launch ceremony, the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation met with Maaike de Langen and her team at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who are responsible for implementation of the Commission's recommendations, to discuss a possible role for the Foundation and Lex Mundi’s member firms in implementing the Commission's recommendations.
