Chinese Women's Rights Advocate Speaks at Lex Mundi Asia Pacific Regional Conference

Wu Qing, co-founder of the Practical Skills Training Center for Rural Women, spoke at the Lex Mundi Asia Pacific Regional Conference, which was held in Beijing on April 23-26, 2008.  Ms. Qing was introduced by Dave Roll, Managing Director of the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation, who also provided a brief update on the work of the Foundation.

A renowned Chinese women's rights advocate, Wu Qing focuses on grassroots training projects that address citizenship, gender, micro-credit, health and legal and political participation.  A legislator since 1984, she has been elected for five terms as the People’s Deputy to the Haidian District People’s Congress and four terms to the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress (the city Parliament).

On the first day of the Lex Mundi regional conference, Dave Roll and a delegation of conference attendees traveled to the Changping District to visit the Practical Skills Training Center for Rural Women.

The Practical Skills Training Center is one of the projects/branches organized under the Cultural Development Center for Rural Women, which is a Non-Government Organization (NGO) that seeks to promote the social development of China's rural women.  Founded in 1993, the foundation has grown from its core activity of publishing the magazine Rural Women (formerly known as Rural Women Knowing All) to become major non-profit organization with an integrated program that supports the poor by combining development projects, news media and information services.  For more information about the Cultural Development Center for Rural Women, please visit www.nongjianv.org.
