Accountability Lab, Inc.

Consultation on Entity Structure

Summary:

Assist a nonprofit working to create accountable institutions by providing a consultation on the best entity structure for their organization.

Referred by:

Jurisdiction(s): U.S.
About the Organization: Accountability Lab is a global translocal network that makes governance work for people by supporting active citizens, responsible leaders and accountable institutions. Their goal is a world in which resources are used wisely, decisions benefit everyone fairly, and people lead secure lives.
Legal Entity Type: Nonprofit/Charity
SDG(s): Climate Action, Gender Equality, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, Reduced Inequalities
Legal Issue(s):

The Accountability Lab team is looking to expand their services and offerings to help drive earned income streams for the organization. They plan to set up an investment fund, increase their fiscal sponsorship activities, and host paid trainings and convenings. The Accountability Lab team believes it may make sense to set up a new legal entity to house these services/offerings. Importantly, they do not want to jeopardize their non-profit status or cause any issues when contracting with the U.S. government. Ideally, this new entity would share income and/or subsidize the activities of the existing non-profit.

The Accountability Lab team is now seeking a comprehensive consultation to discuss what entity structure makes the most sense based upon their goals and activities. They are considering setting up a sister non-profit entity, or hybrid entity (e.g., creating a for-profit subsidiary).
