The Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation connects Lex Mundi lawyers with rewarding, vetted, and unique transactional pro bono opportunities. Our mission is to bring you interesting and impactful projects that allow you to use your legal expertise to give back. The social enterprises we support are referred by the world’s leading capacity-building organizations (our Collaborators) working on cutting-edge projects and doing incredible work worldwide. Each of our collaborators have rigorous application processes, requiring that clients are fully vetted for purpose and viability prior to coming to our program. Foundation staff also meets with each organization to further assess their suitability and legal needs. Although we do not practice law at the Foundation, we are attorneys with experience in both the public and private sectors, giving us the ability to mentor each potential client and ensure they understand and are prepared for pro bono services. During our screenings, we work to distill the client’s legal needs into distinct, defined, shovel-ready projects so that volunteer attorneys have a clear idea of the scope of the project and the potential time commitment involved. We are also available for questions or to act as an intermediary for interested attorneys prior to commitment.
Once a volunteer accepts a project and clears conflicts, we make an introduction, and the attorney and client can begin work. At this point, we step out of the relationship for privilege and confidentiality purposes. However, we are always available to answer questions or assist in managing the relationship if needed. For example, should a client’s legal needs evolve or otherwise begin to extend beyond the scope of the initial ask, we are happy to step in to manage expectations and/or find the client assistance elsewhere.
Tangentially, as part of our value offering, if a member firm has their own pro bono client with needs outside of the firm’s capacity, jurisdiction, or expertise, the Foundation can seek to connect the client with another member firm for assistance!
The benefits of engaging in pro bono work are immense. Beyond the satisfaction of helping a worthy cause, it allows attorneys firmwide to get involved in broader CSR, DEI, and ESG initiatives and creates excellent marketing opportunities for the firm. Further, social entrepreneurs that come through the Foundation often convert into paying clients once they have additional funding, creating business development opportunities. Lastly, while our matters range in complexity, many are suitable for more junior associates and allow for significant client interaction and practice development opportunities.
We love to hear from our attorneys. If there are certain causes or projects that you are particularly interested in, we’re happy to seek them out on your behalf. We also enjoy hearing how the projects are going and are thrilled to highlight your successes!
