Fli Sci

Advise on Becoming 501(c)(3) and Potentially Assist with Formation/Filing

Summary:

Assist a fiscally sponsored organization supporting first-generation or low-income students by advising on becoming an independent 501(c)(3) and potentially assist with formation/filing for nonprofit status.

Referred by:

Jurisdiction(s): U.S. (possibly New Mexico)
About the Organization: FLi Sci supports first-generation and low-income (FLi) students of color by providing them with the formative experiences necessary to pursue academic and medical careers. FLi Sci’s flagship program, FLi Sci Scholars, targets students from schools or in areas with limited science opportunities and empowers them to lead their own research projects. FLi Sci aims to dramatically diversify the scientific profession to ensure that leading researchers better reflect the demographics of the populations impacted by scientific, medical, and technological breakthroughs.
Legal Entity Type: Nonprofit/Charity
SDG(s): Decent Work and Economic Growth, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities
Legal Issue(s):

Fli Sci is currently fiscally sponsored and would like to become an independent 501(c)(3). They believe it makes the most sense to incorporate/file in New Mexico, because that is where they primarily operate and for fundraising purposes. However, they are open to other jurisdictions if they are more appropriate. The Fli Sci team is first seeking a consultation with a tax-exempt attorney to discuss whether spinning off is the right decision for them at this time. Should they move forward, they would also appreciate assistance filing for 501(c)(3) status.
